Shining a Spotlight on Women's Mental Health this International Women's Day

Written by the team behind Mahara Mindfulness

As we approach International Women’s Day (IWD), we want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on an often overlooked yet crucial issue: women’s mental health. At Mahara, our mission has always been to combat mental health challenges, and this IWD, we want to focus specifically on the concerning statistics surrounding women's mental health.

According to CAMH’s womenmind website, women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety compared to men. Despite this, only 3% of global studies include questions specifically related to women's health. This disparity highlights a worrying trend — women’s mental health is not getting the attention it deserves. Without serious attention to gender-specific research and support, we will fail to properly support the mental health of future generations of women.

At Mahara, we believe in the power of self-care tools to combat mental health challenges. One of the simplest yet most effective ways women can take control of their mental health is through journaling. That’s why we created The Human Being Journal — a non-dated, monthly journal designed to help manage mental health and provide perspective.

Journaling offers numerous benefits for mental health, making it a powerful tool for managing stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being.

Here are some of key advantages:

Reduces Stress and Anxiety:
Writing about your thoughts and feelings can help release pent-up emotions, providing a sense of relief and reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. It allows you to externalize what’s on your mind, helping to prevent overwhelming feelings from building up.

Enhances Self-Reflection:
Journaling promotes self-awareness by encouraging you to reflect on your experiences and emotions. This self-reflection can lead to a deeper understanding of your mental state and patterns, helping you recognize triggers and develop healthier coping strategies.

Encourages Gratitude and Positivity:
Journaling can be a great way to practice gratitude. Writing about positive experiences and things you’re thankful for can shift your focus from negative thoughts to positive ones, enhancing overall emotional well-being.
