Why The High-End Hippie Costs More
Let's talk about the thing nobody wants to bring up: the price.
At $36 for a full-size 90g bar, The High-End Hippie sits noticeably above other shampoo bars and most natural hair care brands. It's not by accident. And I want to be completely transparent with you about why; because you deserve to understand what you're actually investing in before you decide.
This isn't a story about branding. It's a story about what it takes to create naturally derived hair care that works. Let's look closer.
1. You're Not Paying for Water
Here's something most people don't realize: the shampoo you've likely been using your whole life is 70–80% water. That's not a criticism, it's just how liquid formulas work. You're buying a bottle of concentrated ingredients diluted with water, packaged in plastic, and shipped at a weight that drives up emissions.
The High-End Hippie's bars are waterless concentrates. A full-size 90g bar equals approximately 750ml of liquid shampoo, (three full bottles worth) and lasts 80-100 washes.
Here's what that actually looks like per wash:
-
A $36 full-size bar ÷ 90 washes = $0.40 per wash.
- Three 250ml bottles of mid-range natural shampoo at roughly $22 each = $66 total ÷ 90 washes =$0.73 per wash.
The sticker price looks different. The math tells a different story.
2. Built to Last and Not Fall Apart
The High-End Hippie's full-size shampoo bars weigh 90g. The industry average sits around 65g. That's nearly 40% more product in every bar before you've even lathered up once.
But size is only part of the story. When cared for properly, (kept dry between uses and stored away from direct water) our bars hold their integrity through their life cycle. It's only in those final washes, when the bar is at its smallest, that you may notice it becoming more fragile. That's simply the nature of a concentrated bar at the end of its life, and it's why we recommend a zero-waste shampoo bag to get every last wash out of it.
Combined with a waterless concentrate that lasts 80–100 washes, you're getting a bar that goes the distance in size, in longevity, and in results.
3. What "Wildcrafted" Actually Means
Most hair care products, even clean ones, are formulated with off-the-shelf botanical extracts. We do something different.
We wildcraft our own botanical infusions right here in the Okanagan and it's a far more time-intensive process than purchasing a premade extract, but it's also a more sustainable one. Wildcrafting allows us to yield a wider range of biochemicals from significantly less plant matter than what's required to produce an essential oil. Using a combination of wildcrafting and essential oils means we're capturing a broader spectrum of what each plant has to offer — more of those active compounds reaching your hair and scalp with every wash.
It takes more time. It takes more expertise. It takes more care. And it's why our bars don't just smell good - they actually work.
Each formula is built around a specific hair and scalp concern:
- Awaken
Wildcrafted with lavender to stimulate circulation for fine, thinning hair - Restore
Infused with milky oats to fortify and remineralize dry, damaged, curly hair - Clarify
Chamomile-infused to tone and brighten blondes and grays while eliminating buildup and dandruff. - Soothe
Rose and marshmallow root for sensitive, itchy, and inflamed scalps - Active
Infused with calendula, a botanical known for its soothing and skin-calming properties, making it ideal for a 3-in-1 shampoo, body wash, and shave bar that leaves skin comfortable and irritation-free from head to toe
These targeted formulas are built to address real, often longstanding hair problems that many of our customers have struggled with.
4. The Ingredients Are Worth It
The High-End Hippie uses ingredients that are either organically farmed, COSMOS/ECOCERT certified, sustainably sourced, or readily biodegradable. That's not a marketing claim, it's a sourcing commitment that adds real cost to every bar we make.
Our formulas are free from sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances and colors. They're pH-balanced at 5.5 to match your hair's natural acidity which prevents the cuticle damage, frizz, and dryness that poorly formulated haircare can cause. They're vegan and Leaping Bunny Certified. And they're all color-safe.
We don't cut corners on ingredients to protect the margin. We protect the integrity of the formula, because results are the whole point.
5. This Is Hair Therapy
Every formula we make is built around a specific concern. Every botanical infusion is wildcrafted. Every batch is made by hand here in Canada. Every ingredient is selected because it belongs there, not because it's cheap or trendy.
We call it hair therapy because that's what it is. Not a swap. Not a compromise. A genuine upgrade to how you care for your hair and scalp (and the planet) every single wash.
If you've been on the fence, you can start by using the Minis of any Shampoo or Conditioner Bar as a set - I am confident you'll love the experience and quickly understand the value.

The High-End Hippie is a Canadian, female-owned hair therapy company founded in 2019 by Amy Hamilton in the Okanagan Valley, BC. Built on the belief that you should never have to choose between what's good for your hair and what's good for the planet, The High-End Hippie creates salon-grade shampoo and conditioner bars wildcrafted with custom organic botanical extracts. These bars are more than a sustainable swap — they're a full sensory experience. Every formula is pH-balanced, colour-safe, and designed to target real hair and scalp concerns. It's hair therapy, not just shampoo bars.
What sets The High-End Hippie apart is their process. The company wildcrafts botanical extracts from Western Canada, infusing organic plant material directly into each formula to maximize bioavailability and results. Five specialized lines — AWAKEN, RESTORE, CLARIFY, SOOTHE, and ACTIVE — are handcrafted in small batches to ensure every bar meets uncompromising standards. A commitment to sustainability is woven into every decision, including using post-consumer waste and FSC-certified packaging, partnering with Canada's only Green-e certified printer and planting one tree with every order through TreeEra. A full-size bar replaces three 250ml bottles of liquid shampoo.
Amy grew up on a 40-acre hobby farm in rural Nova Scotia, where her grandfather's passion for land and water stewardship shaped her earliest values. Resource conscious living was a way of life. That upbringing planted seeds that would eventually grow into a company dedicated to clean formulations, sustainable practices, and conscious community building. After spending years in the world of luxury spas, Amy understood what elevated performance looked like — and what it felt like. But the naturalist in her didn’t like what was inside those bottles: hormone-disrupting chemicals, plastic waste, and formulas built on 70–80% water. When her first son was born, the focus became reducing her family’s exposure to harmful ingredients.
Out of her Okanagan kitchen and with a $20,000 line of credit, Amy launched The High-End Hippie with a clear mission: create shampoo and conditioner bars that perform like salon products — without the plastic, the harmful ingredients, or the compromise. Today, The High-End Hippie has grown into a thriving Canadian brand with over 42 retail partners across Canada and Bermuda, a loyal community with a 72% return rate, and a product line built entirely around targeted hair therapy — not one-size-fits-all formulas.
Amy is a 4/6 Reflector in Human Design — a rare profile representing less than 1% of the population — with an extraordinary sensitivity to the energy of the people and communities around her. She noticed the gap The High-End Hippie was built to fill, not just intellectually, but energetically. Holding a certificate in Integrative Human Design and Gene Keys, Amy's work is informed by Richard Rudd's transformational map of human consciousness, which shapes how she leads, connects, and evolves the business. For Amy, The High-End Hippie was never just about hair. It was always about transformation.
That thread continues beyond the brand. Amy is also an Awareness Facilitator, guiding individuals through body attunement workshops — somatic practices rooted in presence, self-trust, and the belief that the body holds wisdom and guidance.
Amy's legacy vision is to redefine what success looks like — moving away from scarcity, competition, and hustle culture toward an intuitive, collaborative model where everyone wins. She built The High-End Hippie to prove that a business can lead with heart and deliver uncompromising quality. Her approach to retail partnerships, team culture, and community is rooted in the same values she wildcrafts into every bar: authenticity, care, and connection.
At the heart of The High-End Hippie is a wellness company committed to building healthier communities, along with a firm belief that business can be heart-centred, collaborative, and rooted in impact.
